Spring break is just around the corner, and many Oregonians are getting ready for road trips, vacations, and time off with family and friends. As you make plans, Oregon Health Authority (OHA) is reminding you to celebrate safely, especially when it comes to alcohol and transportation.
In Oregon, driving under the influence of alcohol continues to be a major problem. In 2023, 200 people died in crashes involving a drunk driver, which is about 34 percent of traffic deaths in the state.
Planning ahead
Spring break can be a fun time to celebrate and for some people includes drinking alcohol. Before you head out on your spring break adventures, here are a few simple ways to stay safe:

- Plan your ride. Choose a designated driver, use a rideshare service, call a taxi, or take public transportation.
- Never drive if you’ve been drinking alcohol and never ride with someone who has been drinking alcohol.
- Set limits and keep track of how much alcohol you drink.
- Check in on friends and family to make sure they have a safe way to get around.
- If you’re traveling, learn local laws and plan to use alternative transportation.
How alcohol affects health
Alcohol use affects many people in Oregon. Data show:
- About 16 percent of Oregon adults report that they drink heavily.
- Alcohol is the third leading cause of preventable death in Oregon.
- Alcohol use is linked to injuries, emergency room visits, long-term illnesses, and car crashes.
Alcohol use is also connected to several health risks including:
- Injuries
- Liver diseases
- Heart disease
- Certain types of cancer.
Rethink the Drink

OHA’s Rethink the Drink campaign encourages everyone to learn about how alcohol affects their health, especially during times with more social gatherings and travel.
Even small changes like setting limits, planning transportation, or choosing alcohol-free activities can make a big difference and help keep you and your loved ones safe.
