Oregon Health Authority Q&A: How some medications can affect blood sugar

In a previous Oregon Health News article, an Oregon Health Authority (OHA) subject matter expert shared that Type 2 diabetes can sometimes be caused by medications. A curious reader wrote in to learn more:

Q: Your article says Type 2 diabetes can sometimes be caused by some medications. What medications might contribute to people developing diabetes?

A: Several prescription and over-the-counter medication classes can raise blood sugar levels or contribute to the development of new-onset Type 2 diabetes, particularly in people with pre-existing risk factors.

If you are concerned about a specific medication, talk to your healthcare provider.

Oregon Health Authority Diabetes Prevention and Control program partners with organizations across the state to offer health classes and services that help prevent, manage, and reduce the impact of diabetes.
