Show your heart some love

American Heart Month isn’t just another monthly health observance. It may be the awareness month that affects most Americans.

Understanding the heart of the matter

Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States and in Oregon. In fact, about 285,000 adults in Oregon have been diagnosed with heart conditions including angina, heart attacks, and stroke. Each year, between 7,600 and 7,800 Oregonians die from heart disease.

Almost 30 percent of adults in Oregon live with high blood pressure. Many don’t know it because it usually has no symptoms. That’s why it’s often called the “silent killer.” High blood pressure greatly increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Why it matters

Unchecked high blood pressure can stress your heart and blood vessels over time. When you add other risk factors like high cholesterol, unbalanced food choices, and low physical activity, the risk goes up. The good news is that many of these risks are within our control.

Small changes can make a big impact

Show your heart some love by choosing these heart-smart lifestyle actions:

  • Check your numbers regularly. Blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar screenings can catch concerns early.
  • Stay active. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity weekly. A daily walk, swimming, or gardening are some simple ways to reach your goal.
  • Choose heart-healthy foods. Reach for fruits, vegetables and lean proteins. Limit sodium to 2,300 mg per day or less.
  • Limit alcohol use. Limiting alcohol helps lower blood pressure and supports overall heart health.
  • Quit smoking. Quitting tobacco is one of the best things you can do for your heart.
  • Stay connected. Your community or health care provider can help you take your medicine on time, schedule visits, and find services or support you need.

Celebrating hope and progress

American Heart Month isn’t just a reminder; it’s also a chance to take action together. Oregon has many health care providers, fitness groups, and nutrition experts who are ready to help.

This month, check in with someone you care about to ask if they’ve checked their blood pressure, encourage a loved one to take a walk with you, or simply share a kind word with someone going through treatment. Every step and every conversation bring us closer to healthier hearts in our state.

Let’s make February, and every month, a time to honor our hearts.
