In many places around Oregon, spring break starts next week! Many people living in and visiting Oregon are hoping to enjoy the great outdoors as part of their fun. E-scooters and e-bikes are becoming popular ways to explore parks, neighborhoods, and city streets. They’re fun, fast and a great way to get around. As more people ride them, staying safe is more important than ever.

A rider’s story
Daniel Pflieger, an e-scooter rider from Portland, learned the hard way that safety equipment matters. One winter night, he was riding home and his scooter slipped on a patch of ice he didn’t see. He ended up with bruised ribs. Thankfully, he was wearing his helmet.
Daniel shares some simple advice:
- Wear a helmet.
- Pay attention to the road.
- Use extra lights so people can see you.
- Ride at a comfortable speed. E-scooters can go around 17 miles per hour, which may not seem that fast, but it feels fast when you’re out in the open.

E-bikes count too
E-bikes have many of the same risks as e-scooters. Both can go faster than regular bikes and e-scooters and are often used near moving cars. Riders of all ages are using them more, which makes safety even more important.
