Today, Governor Brown, Oregon Health Authority (OHA) and Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) leadership shared information about the latest projection about the spread of COVID-19 in Oregon due to the new Omicron variant.

FDA, CDC, Western States authorize booster doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for 16- and 17-year-olds

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Western States Scientific Safety Review Committee today authorized for emergency use the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for 16- and 17-year-olds, at least six months after they received their second shot of that vaccine.

New medication approved for prevention of COVID-19 in certain adults and children

On Dec. 8, 2021, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized AstraZeneca’s Evusheld under emergency use for prevention of COVID-19 infection in certain adults and children. Evusheld is a long-acting monoclonal antibody therapy.

Wastewater surveillance program expected to detect Omicron spread in communities

Scientists in Oregon are searching for the Omicron variant somewhere you may not expect. In collaboration with Oregon State University (OSU), Oregon Health Authority’s wastewater surveillance program monitors sewage for variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The program launched in September 2020 tests wastewater for COVID-19 in more than 40 communities throughout the state, covering more than 60 percent of Oregon’s population. All positive wastewater samples are sequenced to determine trends (increasing, decreasing, plateau) and which variants are circulating in communities. 

FDA panel endorses first antiviral treatment for COVID-19

Today, an expert panel of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) endorsed the use of the Merck antiviral drug molnupiravir for treatment of symptomatic COVID-19 in test-confirmed patients with high risk conditions. The FDA has not yet authorized the treatment.

Oregon reaches another milestone administering COVID-19 vaccines

With the expansion of pediatric COVID-19 vaccines to children ages 5 to 11 and the approval of booster doses to anyone 18 and older, Oregon recorded more than 6 million COVID-19 doses administered to people eligible for vaccination last week.

Oregon Health Authority (OHA) Director Pat Allen and Oregon Department of Education (ODE) Director Colt Gill were joined by State Epidemiologist Dr. Dean Sidelinger today to announce two new developments in the course of the pandemic: lifting outdoor mask mandates and launching the Test to Stay program in public and private schools.

COVID-19 booster doses authorized for people 18 and older in Oregon
